Three T. C. Lower Boats Crowned State Champs

Like all sports, high school regattas have their traditions. 

At the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships (aka States) and other major regattas, the tradition is that immediately after their 1500-meter sprint, the exhausted rowers in the third-place boat come alongside the small medals dock near the finish line and the viewing stands and use the oars from one side of the boat to hold it temporarily alongside the dock. Rowers stay in their seats while their coaches step over the oars and bend down to drape a bronze medal around each rower’s neck and shake their hands. Proud, cheering parents on shore frantically snap photos or capture short video clips.
