Summer Crew
June 23 - July 26
Summer Crew is a great way to learn to row, hone your skills, stay in
shape, and have a lot of fun! Alexandria Crew Boosters offers
five-week summer rowing programs at the Dee Campbell Rowing Center for novice youth and adults, intermediate youth
sweep rowers, and youth scullers. On and off the water, you'll be using
first-class equipment, learning under experienced coaches, in the finest
boathouse on the Potomac.
- Youth Novice Sweep is a learn-to-row program for students
in the 8th through 12th grades. Rowers are grouped by age and
ability, learn the basics of rowing in 8s, and prepare to go on to
high school rowing. The program meets weekdays from 7:15 to
9:00 a.m. Limit 50 rowers. Fee: $175
- Youth Intermediate Sweep is for high school rowers who
have completed the ninth grade, and at least one competitive season.
Rowers are evaluated by the coaches, and may be reassigned if
additional skill development is needed. This program focuses
on building rowing skills and technique, as well as strength and
endurance. It meets weekdays from 7:00 to 8:15 a.m.
Limit 27 rowerS. Fee: $175
- Youth Sculling, for rowers with
experience as scullers or in a varsity-level 8 or 4. They will
row in quads, doubles and singles, depending on ability. This
program meets weekdays from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. Limit 27 rowers.
Fee:
$200.
- Adult Novice Sweep, for adults of all ages. Maybe
you've watched regattas from the shoreline and thought "This looks
like fun," or want to challenge yourself to get fit or learn
something new. Then this is the program for you. You'll
be taught the basics, and in just a few weeks you could be gliding
across the Potomac! Requirements are a desire to row, and
determination to have a good time. Adult programs meet three
days a week (MWF or TThS) from 6:00 to 7:15 weekdays and 7:00 - 8:00
on Saturday. Participants may be able to continue to train
through the fall for an additional fee, and compete in an October
head race. Limit 30 rowers per program. Fee: $250.
Registration
for Summer Crew is Saturday, June 21 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the
Dee
Campbell Rowing Center. All participants have to submit a signed waiver, and
pass a swim test. There are a limited number of scholarships available
for families who may need assistance with program fees.
The session begins Monday, June 23 and runs for five weeks. (The
Boathouse is closed July 5 because of heavy traffic on the river
following the Washington fireworks the night before). It ends
on Saturday, July 26 with the "Blue Plains Sprints" from
7:00 to 9:00 at the Dee Campbell Rowing Center, where everyone
gets a chance to race.
