Old Dominion Boat Club Boys Summer Select Program 2011

Overview:

  • ODBC will sponsor a two-level Select Boys Program running from early June through Club Nationals that end July 17.
  • Initial fee will be $350 payable at registration via check made to Alexandria Crew Boosters, Inc.  Travel & Hotel fees will be pay as we go.

Objectives:

  • Create the highest quality summer sweep training environment possible for the top junior talent in the DC Metro Area.
  • Simultaneously develop 2 Elite Junior 8’s (age 19 & under) and one or more developmental 8’s (16 & Under) for competition at the Independence Day Regatta, Philadelphia, PA July 1-3 and Club Nationals, Indianapolis, IN July 13-17.  The program will also enter coxed fours at the IDR made up of athletes from the 8-oared crews.

Candidates:

  • High school seniors headed to collegiate programs in the fall of 2011, seeking a more demanding training and racing opportunity than their home school has provided thus far.  This program is designed to emulate a collegiate-level experience.  Experienced scullers from the 2010 PBC Select Junior program especially desired for a final sweep opportunity before college.
  • High school juniors seeking an opportunity to train and race at the highest level prior to the fall 2011 recruiting season.  Special emphasis will be placed on a training program to improve 2K erg times past the end of the high school season, culminating in a fully tapered 2K attempt the week prior to Club Nationals or immediately subsequent, at athlete’s discretion.
  • High school juniors and sophomores seeking a developmental experience to prepare for the 2011-2012 high school season at a newer, higher level.  These candidates would train alongside the older, more experienced athletes, and would have the opportunity to row with said select athletes on a limited basis, but would be entered in B-Level Junior events to insure appropriate competition.

Venue:

  • Dee Campbell Boathouse, Alexandria, VA.  ODBC would be the only junior competitive program using the facility.  A full range of TC Williams and Yorktown provided shells would be available as would an extensive facility of weights and ergs.  During most practice times adequate free parking exists adjacent to the boathouse.

Anticipated Training Plan:

  • Thursday, June 2 – Orientation meeting and late sign up - 5:00 pm at Dee Campbell Boathouse.  Initial briefing, boat house tour, paperwork signing
  • Wednesday, June 8, 5:00 pm late sign-up day for athletes returning from Canada.
  • Thursday, June 9, first practice, 4:30 pm show up time.
  • Typical cycle will be two mornings per week per person in fours, with afternoon workouts each weekday for all hands in both fours and eights.  Two outings per Saturday, with Sundays usually off, but if weather dictates, a possible Sunday afternoon workout may be held.  Cross training in the mornings in the boathouse will be encouraged on an individual basis.  Coaches will be at the boat house every morning, allowing 5 mornings a week, at athlete’s discretion.
