National Team Members

It is hard to talk about the rowing tradition in Alexandria and the Washington area without noting the contributions of our alumni to elite rowing in America. It is a matter of great pride for us that many rowers who got their start in Alexandria move up to junior national camps and team, college crews, coaching, and even the national team.

At the most elite level, three of our rowing kin represented the United States in Sydney at the 27th Olympiad. TC Crew alums Nick Peterson (’91), Linda Miller (’90) and Mike Porterfield (’85) went to the other end of the world. They carried their country’s colors on the TC Crew shirts we provided to remind them how we take pride in their accomplishments.

Starting at TC Williams and continuing through their elite rowing careers their records are replete with championship medals, memories of heartbreaking competition and glorious wins, and other experiences to last their lifetimes.

All races, from the first heats to the last sprint there on the course in Penrith, were hard fought—as hard fought as most championship races that TC Crew experiences at Stotesbury, only on a grander scale, with considerably greater skill and higher stakes. And there is that added pressure of representing not only your school but an entire nation.

There is a distinguished list of former George Washington, Francis Hammond and TC Williams rowers who have borne that honor. They took what they were given here in Alexandria—a credit to our coaches—and with abundant determination and sacrifice continued to grow as rowers and leaders in their sport. Here’s a list of those rowers and some of their accomplishments as members of the US national team (including the Junior National Team). (Some details are missing and if we missed citing anyone, please let us know!)
