Maureen Tuchowski
Originally from upstate New York, Maureen Tuchowski began
rowing as a sophomore for the Shaker High School Rowing
association. Beginning with those first brisk early spring
afternoons in an eight on the Hudson River, Maureen knew that
she had found a connection to both the sport and her
teammates. Today, it is with a sense of nostalgia for the
dilapidated boathouse, the indefinable smell emanating from
the banks of the Hudson approximately 3000 meters out, and the
romanticized memories of the “Choo Choo…”and the Schoenbrod
that she recalls those coming of age years that have helped to
shape the young coach that today joins the T.C. Williams Crew
family.
In Maureen’s 3 years of crew experience, she has participated
in spring sprints, fall head races, and winter erg-a-thons. As
a port-side rower, in both fours and eights, Maureen has
participated in a variety of races including New York
State Scholastic Championships in Syracuse, NY, SRAA
Scholastic National Championships, Head of the Connecticut,
Head of the Fish, and Head of the Hudson between 2000 and
2002.
Following her graduation from high school, Maureen earned her
degree in political science and English from the State
University of New York at Buffalo (UB). During her tenure at
UB, she interned from the DC Attorney General’s office in the
spring of 2004. It was during this internship program that
Maureen was first introduced to the city of Alexandria. Upon
graduation from UB, Maureen accepted a position as a teacher
through the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows where she worked for
three years at Kensington Business High School and coached
high school students in distance running through Students Run
Philly Style. Looking to move back to the city that she once
fell in love with, Maureen transferred to T.C. Williams High
School in June of 2009 as a teacher in US/VA government.
Today, Maureen resides on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. She
enjoys running along the GW Parkway and is preparing for the
Broad Street 10-miler in Philadelphia on May 6th and the
ODDyssey half marathon on May 26th. Growing up with the
Adirondack Mountains lining the horizon, Maureen continues to
enjoy skiing and hiking whenever possible. Whether for
camaraderie or competition, crew has been an immensely
influential sport in Maureen's life and she hopes to impart
that same sense of passion and commitment in her novice
rowers.
